iMac G5

The iMac G5 was a all in one computer that was the 3rd  generation of the iMac line.  It was the first iMac to have the design that has been used or built off of by all succeeding iMacs. It was also the first iMac and one of the first Macs, and computers to have a front facing camera installed inside the computer, to be used for video conferencing.

As you can see here the iMac G5 was the first iMac to implement just a flat screen on a stand.  Other than its color it is very similar to the iMacs marketed and sold by Apple today. Obviously the iMac G5 was much chunkier, wider, and much less "beautiful" than the ones of today.  But sadly I think that apple should have kept making their distinct and cutting edge designs of their iMacs. Sadly they turned to making it look like a fancy monitor instead of an "amazing computer".

The iMac G5 was very fast for its time though, it implemented one of, if not Apple's fastest processor at, for the time, a blazing 2.1 GHz. And lots of groundbreaking new technologies that were never part of the PC before.  Access to Bluetooth, and Video cameras was restricted to buying another device to connect to your computer, and the same with using a remote to control your computer.  But apple took a bold step and added them all together into one thin screen, and it nudged other companies into it also. For example, now all new computers and mobile devices have a camera, with conferencing, video, and picture capabilities, allowing us to even further document our lives and give people easy access to something that was relatively expensive before.

The iMac G5 was very successful, it was certainly more successful than its iMac G4 predecessor. Even though the iMac G4 was also successful, it was a little too unconventional for its design but received praise.  The new iMac G5 was much more expensive, though, the iMac G4 sold for under $2000, but the new iMac's typical price was around $2500.  Which did not follow the iMac G3, after Apple boasted about its low price.  But still it was very successful, you can still regularly see it when walking into schools, offices, even homes, although they are usually not in use anymore.

A Sad Ending

After 8 years using Apple designed "G" processors the iMac G5 was the last iMac to use a Apple processor.  The new iMac which would have the same design, but would have a different processor, an Intel Core Duo.  Giving it is name "iMac Intel".  The picture here of this G5 was made for the Power Mac G5, the iMac G5 had a smaller more compact processor.

What's In The Box?

The iMac G5 came with an iMac G5, a keyboard, mouse, power cord, system discs, guides, and on certain models a remote.  You could also buy a camera, or remote separately.
